This is a small cozy cafe with a piano, a caged parrot and icons. The menu offers standard dishes and vegetarian food for those who keep fast. All alcoholic drinks except beer are unavailable. Priests deliver sermons here several times a week. The cafe is always full.
Natalia, the owner of this unique Orthodox cafe, had never thought that she would combine restaurant business and religion. "It occurred to me to open an Orthodox cafe-club two years ago. There are a few sites in Moscow where believers can meet. However, we have various visitors. Ordinary restaurants and cafes gain by the sale of beverages and immoral shows. We offer a different cultural program," Natalia told Novye Izvestia newspaper.
Prayers help her to survive amid dozens of popular rivals with bright neon signs. "When our bookkeepers go to the tax office, I always say my prayers. Certainly, priests speaking in the club gives us much moral support," she said.
"Priests speak here on Tuesdays. On Saturday we sing Orthodox songs, on Thursday watch movies and on Friday we meet with Orthodox writers or hold soirees of classical music, romance and poetry," said artistic director Vyacheslav. He was a rock musician in the 1980s. He got religion in the early 1990s and turned back to music ten years later. "Each speech implies a conversation with visitors, questions and answers. The priest chooses the topic himself," he noted.
Cleaner Gulia is the only Muslim among the cafe staffers. She has a big collection of crosses and icons presented by priests speaking at the cafe. They hope that Gulia will adopt Orthodoxy someday.
